Georgia on My Mind: A Southern Weekend in Savannah

Savannah, Georgia, exemplifies Southern hospitality and is known as one of the South's friendliest cities.

With a winning combination of art galleries, museums, distinctive architecture, communal parks and cobblestone streets, Savannah is practically a small-scale European city. Its rich history and old-world charm make it worthy of a stop for families and solo travelers alike.

Here’s how to spend a weekend in the Hostess City!

Getting There

The best way to get to Savannah is to fly into Savannah/Hilton Head airport, which offers nonstop flights from more than 30 locations nationwide.

Although you can fly into Hilton Head Island airport in South Carolina, be prepared for at least a 45-minute (and expensive) Uber, Lyft or cab ride to Savannah. Take it from someone who learned this lesson the hard way…

Where to Stay

For an authentic experience, book a historic property via Airbnb/VRBO or a room in one of the many colonial-style hotels in downtown or on River Street. The River Street Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, and Marriott Savannah Riverfront Hotel are all noteworthy options. They offer comfortable guest rooms and direct access to neighborhood restaurants, shops and bars.

If you prefer to vacation away from the hustle and bustle, stay at The Landings on Skidaway Island. See a different side of Savannah by golfing, boating, biking, hiking/walking, and spending time outdoors.

What to Do

First and foremost, explore downtown! It’s abuzz with cultural events, festivals, concerts, live theater, and al fresco entertainment.

Savannah is the soul of coastal Georgia and is home to sprawling gardens, Spanish oak-shaded parks, and remarkable statues. Over twenty city squares are filled with stately mansions and monuments of the Revolutionary and Civil War eras. Take a trolley tour to learn more – and don’t forget to stroll through beautiful Forsyth Park.

Eventually, make your way to the Savannah River and unwind on River Street. The century-old warehouses of River Street have been converted to welcoming hotels, boutiques, restaurants, and pubs. The working harbor, with horse-drawn carriage rides, trolley rides, and street performers, adds to this picturesque waterfront boardwalk.

Georgia Queen riverboat on the Savannah River.

River Street is perfect for watching container ships pass by on the canal or embarking on a riverboat cruise. I recommend eating lunch at District Seafood and admiring the view with one of their signature libations in hand.

Parting Salutations

Sunset at nearby Skidaway Island.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly captivated by my weekend adventures in the South. There’s something for everyone on the shores of the Peach State. Georgia will always be on my mind – I can’t wait to return!
