Fletcher's flack wants satire censored

Where is that free parking?

Super-supervisor Fletcher: “We must not let monkeypox make a monkey out of us. But it will be difficult. On the one hand, the coronavirus taught us that we must sometimes take drastic measures to stop the spread: closing businesses, churches, and schools; preventing public gatherings that are not political protests; and all the rest of it. On the other hand, the disease’s outbreak in this case seems to be mostly spread through sexual contact, and it’s not like we can ask people to stop having sex. This is America. And more to the point, this is California, which, as Governor Newsom has reminded us recently, is the Freedom State. How can we follow his call to Choose Freedom if we can’t even Free Willy?”

Mission Bay secret parking revealed

On the front page of the current Reader down on the left side on the bottom it says “Secret free parking in Mission Bay.” I have to wonder if this is just a ploy to get people to search through the Reader because I can’t find that story or anything about that subject in the Reader.

So if you’ve actually got some information about free parking in Mission Bay that secret, don’t make it a secret in the Reader itself. Maybe in the next issue you could actually publish what maybe you meant to publish that was not published in this particular volume 47 number 34. Thank you.

Editor: Sorry, the cover line should have included the words “See this week’s Feast.” The Feast story “Stay barefoot, baby,” page 36, contained the information about the free parking.

Spooky Greenwood nights

I just read the article about the cemeteries and everything (“Artificial flowers not welcome at Mt. Hope,” Cover Stories, August 24). All I wanna tell you one thing I have family members buried at Greenwood Memorial Park since the day it opened and I’ll tell you right now everything they said that they do not allow to be on the graves, is on the graves, and they’re on the graves daily, weekly and daily.

There is so much crap on those graves that you can’t even see the headstones sometimes. They’re supposed to be called dignity, but they sure don’t look dignified, especially the entrance. The entrance looks like a third-world country, with all the ornaments and trees and fences and potted plants and crap that’s all over those gravesites.

I just want to dispute the fact that they say they don’t allow it, but yet they allow everything. They even have dogs running around there on weekends and people having barbecues on other peoples’ gravesites. I have witnessed it many, many times.

Like I said, I’ve had family buried there since 1918, and I am appalled every time I go to see my parents or my grandparents, because the gravesites up there are absolutely horrifying with all the knickknacks and crap up there.

There’s also some of them that put creepy stuff up there on Halloween and on Christmas time.

This may be misleading

I am the Director of Communications for County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.

On August 13, 2022 your paper published a satire piece by Walter Mencken titled: “County Super-supervisor Fletcher says vaccines are not enough: ‘We must fight the real enemy.’

Given the nature that monkeypox is a public health issue, it is extremely inappropriate to do a made-up piece on this topic when the community needs factual information, this may be misleading to people.

I am requesting that you:

1.) take it down completely so as not to spread public health misinformation; however if for some reason you are not willing, then please

2.) make it more clear that Supervisor Nathan Fletcher never made any of those statements as your paper has quoted.

Thank you,

James Canning
