Kept her cash in cat box

Mary Ann and her husband, Oct. 2000. “Mary Ann was left pretty much impoverished when her husband died a few years back.”

A 74-year-old American woman who lived full-time in her home in Bahia de los Angeles in Baja has been missing for two months.

Mary Ann Humfreville was discovered missing after she failed to appear at a breakfast meeting with a group of friends on December 17.

One of her sons reported he last spoke on the phone with her the afternoon before, about 3:30 pm December 16. And a friend said they messaged each other about 4 pm that same winter day.

One friend posted online, “She would not have left for Guerrero Negro that late in the afternoon, nor without letting someone know.”

One of the internet postings: “I'm Kevin Humfreville, son of Mike and Mary Ann, … I just found out this morning that my mom has been missing from the Baja house for 2 days now. Her and her car are gone, but her cat and dog are still at the house. Not something that she would do.” He was informed that local police were notified and a report had been made, and “We're looking for anything.”

Friends who went to her house found her dog and cat inside. And Mary Ann’s shoes and glasses and her purse containing her ID and cards and American dollars were still there.

“We were told that the bad guys did not get her wallet that had some money in it,” one source has told me. “But the cat box was apparently where she hid her cash. And it was out on her bed with nothing in it.” And, “We all have the same problem with having to have cash on hand since there are no banks or ATMs. She was an easy target.”

This same source declared, “The door she usually went in and out of was secured from the inside. The bad guys came in through a side door. Her generator and a small Honda outboard are missing as well as her truck.”

Mary Ann’s red 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck, with California plates 7A92402, is missing.

Concerned friends of Humfreville are spreading the word as best they can. One post on the online source BajaNomad: “(Mary Ann had) no health issues that I have heard about, not much of a desert explorer, very much a homebody. She goes to Train on Tuesdays, lunch or cards with friends and Saturday breakfast at Alejandrinas. She would not leave without letting someone know and would not leave for long without her loyal pets.”

Humfreville apparently spoke no Spanish. Bahia de los Angeles is a popular spot for retired Americans, and is part of the town of San Quintin.

She is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, with short gray hair. She and her husband Mike had two sons, David and Kevin, and the sons have posted queries on various online media pages.

Mary Ann met her future husband Mike at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. They had two sons.

One long-time neighbor, Eddie: “Mary Ann Humfreville was our neighbor, she has been a good friend for about 15 years. This is a real shock to all of us.” He said, “Mary Ann was left pretty much impoverished when her husband died a few years back.” Eddie said he helped carry Mike to the ambulance, when Mike had a heart attack.

Eddie remembered, “They bought the house but did not own the land. They were in the process of buying the land when Mike died. Mary Ann finally got the land ownership but found out that it was on the lot next door. She spent several more years trying to get that straightened out and still had not done it. She did not have the resources to hire a good Mexican attorney to help straighten it out. She did not or could not afford a home in California so she was in the bay because it was all she had.”

Mary Ann reportedly met her future husband Mike Humfreville at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. “They helped get our spacecraft to Mars,” one friend declared online.

Mike Humfreville wrote a book about their adventures in Baja, In the Shadow of the Volcano.

Mike and Mary Ann Humfreville raised two sons.

The Attorney General of California created a missing person page for Mary Ann Humfreville.
