How long have you been surfing?
Erik: “I have been out in the ocean since I was 6 or 7 and surfing since I was 10.”
Kristen: “I started surfing when I was around 6.”
Erik: “She was tiny!”
How often do you get in the water?
Erik: “We go every week. Even when the conditions are bad, we still try to get out into the ocean.”
Kristen: “Yeah, it’s a bonding thing for us. We go out a lot.”
Favorite surf moments?
Erik: “My greatest moment with Kristen was when she paddled into her first green wall by herself. That was the best. She was probably 8 or 9. I was like finally!”
Kristen: “Sometimes we catch the same wave together. That’s fun.”
Have you seen any cool wildlife?
Erik: “At upper trestles I saw a little baby great white breached. That was crazy. Seeing the whales migrate is pretty rad.”
Have you had any bad injuries?
Erik: “No, I’ve been lucky so far.”
Kristen: “I got stung by a sting ray. I was scared. It hurt really bad. I did’t tell my dad until we got home because I thought he would take me to the hospital.”
Have you gone on any cool surf trips?
Erik: “Yeah, I try to go on surf trips a couple of times a year. I went to Scotland. That was an adventure. I think that was my favorite surf trip. I went to Nicaragua and there was a war going on at the time. There was a moment where we were coming around a rotunda and there were like 100 people with machine guns. There were bombs going off and buses on fire. That was a little bit terrifying. I really liked Peru and I surf all over Baja. I like Baja a lot!”
Kristen: “We are taking a [surf] trip to Costa Rica in June with the whole family.”
Any surfing pet peeves?
Kristen: “There’s just a lot of kooks out there sometimes.”
Erik: “Everyone wants to surf. That’s great, but [unexperienced surfers] go out on big days. Everyone just wants to challenge themselves. That puts people that know what they are doing in jeopardy because not only do we have to deal with mother nature, but also with people who don’t understand where to be”
What is your favorite spot to surf in San Diego?
Erik: “Ah, undisclosed locations.”
Kristen: “Yeah, same!”
What do you love most about the Sport?
Kristen: “The environment, the people, and the community.”
Erik: “It clears my mind. I like getting out of the concrete jungle and getting lost out there.”
