Yesterday, Mayor Faulconer spoke at the unveiling of a huge Target logo on the facade of Toxic Tower, aka 101 Ash Street. “Unfortunately,” he said, “the City of San Diego can’t use the inside what was going to be a government office building, thanks to all the chemicals and stuff we found there. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a total loss. The tower is a highly visible landmark, and that visibility has value. We’re proud to say that we’ve partnered with Target to begin the process of turning it into a king-sized billboard, an innovation that will help to define the downtown skyline for as long as the building stands. Which should be a really long time, barring some horrible disaster. But seriously, what are the odds? It’s not like we’ve ever had…what’s that? Oh, okay. Folks, I’m getting a message that my term, er, time is up. Looks like this will be a matter for my successor. In the meantime, keep on Target, San Diego!
