Switchfoot will play in the Petco Park parking lot for California's first post-pandemic concert on Sunday, June 7, headlining an evening bill that includes Hirie. An additional noon show features locals Los Sleepwalkers, SM Familia, and the B-Side Players, with all ticket proceeds to benefit Feeding San Diego.
In keeping with current social distancing policies, the concert will be staged in a drive-in theater format, with patrons able to enjoy from their cars while the bands play on a platformed stage, projected live on a drive-in style screen backdrop.
Switchfoot may be raising money for a cause, but they're also plugging their upcoming six-song EP Covers, preceded this week by a single covering Frank Ocean's "Swim Good." Other tracks on the EP to tackle numbers by Vampire Weekend, Harry Styles, the Verve, the Chainsmokers, and Jon Bellion. Their 16th annual BRO-AM event will be livestreaming on their website on June 27.
The band’s recent five-song Reimagine/Remix EP features remakes of their own tunes, with guest players like electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling on the track “Voices,” for which she also co-directed the accompanying music video. Other contributors include Brent Kutzle (One Republic), Will Chapman (Colony House), John Painter (Fleming and John), and Mason Self. A music video recently debuted online for the remixed version of “Wonderful Feeling.” A new version of their song “Joy Invincible” features Christian songwriter and vocalist Jenn Johnson.
Opening act Hirie is a female-fronted reggae rock band nominated Best World Music at the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. Their sophomore album Wandering Soul, released in summer 2016, debuted at number one on the iTunes Reggae Chart and climbed as high as number 39 overall on iTunes. It also hit number one on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart, and number ten on the Heatseekers Albums Chart.
A new Hirie single with fellow hometown heroes Slightly Stoopid debuted in last summer, "I Like the Way You Roll," previewing their most recent album Dreamer. Other album guests include locals Iration (on "Stay With Me Tonight") and Chali 2na ("Put it Down"). A video was produced for the record's fourth single "Message In A Bottle."
SM Familia is a Latin reggae, funk and cumbia band nominated in 2014 by the San Diego Music Awards for Best World Album. Former bassist/guitarist Nikola Pantic previously toured with King Schascha and later co-founded Electric Elms.
The Sleepwalkers have been playing authentic Americana roots rock since 1992. They specialize in original American music styles ranging from blues, country, Tex-Mex, Cumbia, and their own brand of roots rock. In 1999 they released their first album Can't Stop Rockin' on Relampago-go records, which earned them positive national reviews, and a nomination for Best Americana album at the San Diego Music Awards.
Their songs "Dead of Night" and "Vas A Ver!" were included in the 2007 movie Ofrenda Desnuda, which was directed by International Film Award Winner, Guillerma Von Son. Mostly active from 1992 to 2002, they reformed in 2013, and continue to play their original brand of Americana and roots rock, with their 2017 CD Roots Rockin’, featuring mostly original songs written by the band, earning a nomination for Best Local Recording at the 2017 San Diego Music Awards. Former guitarist Gene Edwards went on to play with Dwight Yoakam's band.
Karlos Paez founded the B-Side Players in 1994. “People compare us to Ozomatli all the time,” he once told the Reader. “But they used to come to see us play back before they became a band themselves.” Their 2009 record Radio Afro Mexica won Best World Album at that year’s San Diego Music Awards. The band won Best World Music at the 2011 SDMAs, an award they took home again in 2012.
