“I was shocked,” said local American Sam Eagle. “This is America. I know we have freedom of speech, but that does not give anyone the right to undermine an extremely profitable — and at the moment, unfortunately, extremely wobbly — trade relationship with one of the only nations on earth that has sufficient technological infrastructure combined with sufficient numbers of desperate workers to fulfill America’s manufacturing needs. As for the coronavirus, they’ve told us that they’re looking into it, that they’ve done everything they can, and that it’s under control. What possible good can come from challenging that narrative? It’s not going to bring anybody’s grandmother back. Neither will reparations. Frankly, I think it’s disgusting to consider putting a dollar amount on the worth a human life, or even 100,000 human lives. The past is past. All we can do now is move forward and acknowledge that everybody has different strengths. Here in America, we’re good at living comfortable lives and having democracy. There in China, they’re good at making stuff for cheap. Apples and oranges, really.”
