Adam Parfrey goes to the San Diego Zoo
- It is not generally appreciated that famous publisher Adam Parfrey once lived just off Lincoln Boulevard, a dismal stretch of gasoline-alley slightly east of Venice, California, and just over the line in Santa Monica. Twenty years ago I used to see him in the local coffeehouse. Sometimes he had his current girlfriend with him, sometimes it was just Adam.

Unsolved murder of gringos on the Sea of Cortez
- “I confronted two guys, two nights before.” Before the deadly night, Eddie had his own confrontation. His encounter was on a Wednesday night not long after midnight. “I was in the bathroom in the middle of the night, it’s dark, I heard them talking,” Eddie remembered. “The motion detector light came on and they were walking past the house, talking, towards the beach.”

- From Temecula, to Aguanga, Warner Springs, Julian, Lake Cuyamaca, and Descanso, Highway 79 winds, climbs, and wiggles 82 miles through deserts, mountains, foothills, valleys, and oases. Two botanists are showing me the entirety of Highway 79, because it passes through some of the most biologically diverse areas in San Diego County, a county that is, they say, arguably the most biologically diverse in the United States.

- LimeBike is big on punny names — you don’t pick up scooters, you “harvest” limes. Then you take them home and, instead of charging them, you’ll “juice” the rides before “serving” them to the public at a designated drop point, all of which seem to be confined to Downtown, Mission/Pacific Beach, and North Park, though the scooters seem to find ways to travel far beyond their home markets.

- Educators who knew or worked with Page agreed to be interviewed but not for attribution. Aware of the adversarial relationship between Page and school officials, they fear retribution from administrators if they speak in support of him. They say his final battle at Lincoln — one he lost which may have been the catalyst for his suicide — was on behalf of a student who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a school restroom.
