The City of Chula Vista today released its proposed solution to the recently reheated controversy surrounding the statue of Christopher Columbus in the city’s Discovery Park. “We think it’s important not to erase our nation’s history by tearing down reminders of major figures in its development,” explained city grievance manager Angela Munoz. “Christopher Columbus marks a point of intersection between the Old World and the New, and there’s no sense in pretending that this wasn’t hugely significant. Or even that there weren’t great goods that came of it. But we also think it’s important not to whitewash history — to look at the achievements of one particular nation, one particular (white) people, and not consider the cost at which they came. So yes, it’s true that nearly every major civilization has been built on the backs of the exploitable. The Romans had slaves just like the Aztecs. The English had their colonies. And the Americans had…lots of folks, starting with the indigenous inhabitants of this fair land. So Columbus will still stand in the newly renamed America park. He’ll just have company.”
