“‘Black Lives Matter’ is a brilliant slogan, but I started to worry that it’s message wasn’t getting through all the surrounding noise any more,” says San Diego Black Lives Matter supporter Reggie Johnson. I don’t want to waste time arguing with people who try to co-opt or drain it of power by saying that All Lives Matter or White Lives Matter or whatever. So when we got ready to do a little street painting the way they did in DC and New York, we thought of amplifying the message somehow, to boost the signal. We talked about ‘Black Lives Always Matter,’ to get the message across that this movement isn’t going away, and that the Powers that Be can’t just wait for things to quiet down and go back to normal. But the acronym BLAM seemed a little dicey, given the oppositions fondness for pointing out the way that gun violence afflicts the African-American community. But then one of our members said that while ‘Always’ addressed time, we still needed to address space, because so many Americans still think this is a problem Somewhere Else. So we came up with Black Lives Always Matter Everywhere, which works nicely.”
