I’ve been a part of San Diego since 1969. I graduated from Patrick Henry High, lived through the PSA crash, Kara Knott/Craig Peyer, Dennis Conner’s Americas Cup and Brenda Spencer was in my gym class. This “Barista” whining about the cost of living here should just go home (“Scratchy Goodwill rag, or Egyptian cotton from Bed Bath and Beyond?,” Ask a Hipster, August 28).
The idea that he and Ask A Hipster act as you are “owed” something in return for your Eco/Green 32-hour work is insulting. Not even the scant and frankly poor suggestions of how to “economize” in order to live here is flat out disingenuous. You can’t hang in San Diego? Leave. Nobody is making you nor did anyone force you to move here. The responsibility of moving here rests solely and entirely on you. If you didn’t bother to research and understand the economic impact of your decision before you made it, that is on you.
Everyone loves the “sun and fun” that is San Diego and that’s grand however, it comes at a price. Period. You want to play you have to pay. Plain and simple. San Diego is a town born of the military. It is one of THE top destinations on the planet. It’s home to the busiest border in the word. The second highest Hispanic and gay communities in California are right here in San Diego. The breadth of opportunity here is staggering and if you’re truly so into a more eco/free-range burger. Why not give a go at ranching or even poultry work and take in a 40-50 -hour week before you whine about your cost of living while expecting a non-cable T.V, public transportation grass-fed burger-demanding cash-strapped life you are CHOOSING to live.
For the record, my dad was born and raised in Morelia Mexico before LEGALLY coming to the U.S. and joining the Navy to become a Submariner whose first deployment was the Cuban Missile crises when my mom was 19 and I was 5 months old. Then please consider that my mom was 24 when she bought her first house on Monroe Ave behind Hoover High and raised me while attending night school at Coleman College graduating with an degree in computer science that led her to defense contracting and then the federal government that culminated in meeting President Ronald Reagan for her work in defending our country. Do this before you whine that working 32 hours is too much for you to live in this, America’s Finest City. You are entitled to change your situation and own that choice. Don’t hide behind a veil that you have not earned.
The photo of the snake does not look like a Rosy Boa (“Spooner’s Mesa: once mesa top home to Olive and Christopher Spooner above the Tijuana River,” Roam-a-Rama, August 28).They are more squat and blunt on both ends. Looks more like a two striped racer. Fast and thin, kind of dark. A good find never the less!
