Regarding the article “San Diego County Water Authority follows SDG&E’s example, shuts off supply to wildfire-threatened areas” (SD on the QT, October 18), we respectfully ask that you remove it from your website and refrain from sharing it on social media because it is creating confusion about a critical public safety issue – the availability of water to areas that we serve. This is especially disconcerting during the wildfires California is experiencing. While we recognize the satirical nature of the story, not everyone does. The story shows up in Google news alerts, and we’ve already had to address this with a handful of concerned residents. It is the equivalent of yelling “Fire!” in a theater – a reckless action that could create significant public safety challenges if people believe they will be without water. We will very much appreciate your immediate attention to this request. Thank you.
This is about two letters in the San Diego Reader Oct. 24 from people claiming to be past homeless. Both give extremely inaccurate information, leading me to question the validity or genuineness of the letters. Paul Argent suggests homeless get $1,500 a month SSI and could rent a room for $500. SSI is $650 a month, plus up to $200 in other aid. It requires proof of being handicapped or being over age 65 (either one). Any Social Security received is deducted from the SSI amount. Renting a room costs $1,200 to $1,800 per month, with no evictions nor homelessness on your credit report. He also indicates most homeless are on drugs, (it’s currently about 25%), but the biggest lie is that some of them actually want to be homeless. No, but people adapt. And, being homeless long enough leads to drug abuse and mental illness, eventually. The other letter (Anonymous, Linda Vista) has some of the same hallucinations, such as most of our homeless being from other cities (it’s about 5%) and they just got out of mental hospitals (less than 25% of San Diego homeless are mentally ill). The Reader is too respected a newspaper to carry this anti-homeless hate speech.
The City shouldn’t be trying to squeeze SDSU for money (“Moores and minions grab no-bid Aztec Stadium deal,” News Ticker, June 4). They should be offering the land to the university for $1 in recognition of all the benefits the campus has brought to the region. The space is critically needed and should be developed as quickly as possible so students can get the classes they need to graduate in 4 years – not 6.
I was beginning to wonder what Republicans are waiting for. No matter one’s political stripe, it seems that siding with this perversion of a president over the United States Constitution seems unAmerican (“Dumps Over Trump’s,” SD on the QT, October 4). Finally, the passing days and the damning revelations are convincing more and more Republicans to fall out of that shameful line and prefer the values of the United States of America. Thank god.
