Don't let Linda Vista fool you

Skate World, Clairemont rivalry, Yum Yum Donut Shop, Morena Corridor, utopia in 1940s-50s

  • Butt out, Clairemont, says Linda Vista

  • "I have a lot of respect for the Clairemont planning group and the other planning groups — they're citizens like us who are investing in their community," said Howard Wayne, a planning group member and former California assemblyman. "But we are the people best positioned to know what's best for Linda Vista."

  • Linda Vista's Skate World, you're fine, now go away

  • Linda Vista residents were stunned to learn Monday night that Civic San Diego, a wing of city government, is quietly selling off the land beneath the historic building that is Skate World, where 15,000 people come each month from all over the region to skate, celebrate and drop off kids knowing they’ll be safe.

  • I Live in Linda Vista

  • I get it! Linda Vista is not all that cool. When I first moved here from Clairemont (more on that later), I told my friends I lived in Kearny Mesa or near Mesa College. Linda is Spanish for pretty; vista is view and mesa is table. So I'd rather live on the table than in pretty view.

  • New Linda Vista apartments welcomes present tenants

  • Lillibelle and Jimmy have lived in their Linda Vista apartment complex for more than twenty years. So when the 36-apartment complex was sold for $8.3 million last year, the couple began keeping track of the buyer’s plans – especially after their rent was nearly doubled.

  • Don’t let Linda Vista fool you

  • Has Linda Vista lost its heart? The Yum Yum Donut Shop in the Vien-Dong supermarket center has become the place where old-time Linda Vistans turn up to chew the fat. "This shopping mall that used to be here, our town square, social center, whatever you want to call it, was the heart of Linda Vista," says Ben Estopare, whose Filipino dad settled here in 1960.

  • Residential puts squeeze on Linda Vista retail/industrial

  • “The neighborhood isn’t crazy about this,” said Howard Wayne about the city’s suggestion to build up to 90 feet high on West Morena Boulevard. Wayne heads the Morena Corridor Specific Plan subcommittee for the Linda Vista planning group. He said the triggering event for both the specific plan and a new residential project proposal was the two new planned trolley stations.

If/when all goes according to plan, the wrecking balls will be swinging into these buildings.
  • Linda Vista skate park open to law-breakers only

  • The Linda Vista skate park was supposed to open in August. Then in September...November...January… By all appearances, the facility looks open. Skaters are spotted there all the time — though, kids sneaked into the park for much of 2017.

  • Linda Vista in conflict with itself

  • Linda Vista is San Diego’s cucuy room. People drive past it on the way to somewhere. Sometimes they go there for a specific place like Skate World but don’t venture anywhere else. But look more closely and walk into the side streets off the main drag and you’ll see things you’ll bookmark for future reflection when you’re lying in bed, and you’ll think, What the hell was that about?

The local haunted house, the Paul E. Kidd church, has been recently turned into a luxury apartment building.
  • Later, Skaters

  • Skateworld, a Linda Vista landmark on Linda Vista Road, is on its way to extinction after the San Diego Redevelopment Agency approved a negotiation agreement on June 15 with a development company for the agency-owned property.

  • Socialist Dad loves Linda Vista paradise

  • Everyone who lived there knew the name meant “pretty view.” Maybe it wasn’t utopia. But it was a planned community for low-income people that, for a considerable period, managed to succeed. I lived there from 1946 until I graduated from high school in 1956. There may have been some kind of social stigma attached to it, but I don’t feel growing up in the project gave me a stunted childhood.
