Clara Macculloch was pulling her board out of her Dad’s car in Sunset Cliffs when we stopped to chat. “I live right at the end of the Cliffs so this is my favorite spot to surf. I come here with my Dad a lot. He got me started on surfing when I was really young, but I didn’t really get into it myself until high school."
"I was scared when I was little but I eventually got over it and kept going. This is my fourth year and I still wouldn’t consider myself good. I don’t go enough and it takes a lot of time to get good at surfing.”
This morning Macculloch is surfing with a new board. “This is a 7’6” fun board, I just got it from Bird, he’s a local guy. I mostly got it because I live in Santa Barbara now and it suits the waves up there. It’s also a good size for me.”
Macculloch’s worst surfing injury happened in Hawaii. “One time in Hawaii I tried to go surfing and my board hit me right in the rib cage area and I got this big scar. It was the scariest moment, I couldn’t really breath and there was blood everywhere. I didn’t get stitches, I just put glue on it. My friend got a scar under his eye too, so it’s kind of part of the surfing experience.”
