The Paragraphs and Drug Hunt

  • Thursday, July 18, 2019, 8 p.m.
  • Belly Up Tavern, 143 S. Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach
  • 21+ / $8 - $14

Based in Encinitas and Carlsbad, the Paragraphs were founded in early 2009 by Mike Hunt (drums) and Jesse Lee Hofbauer (vocals, guitar). After two initial releases (2009’s Gallows EP and 2010’s Hey! EP) and a couple of tours, their debut full-length +/- was recorded at White Horse Recorders and engineered by Aaron Swanton, with its first single “There is Nothing You Can Do” out in late 2012. A couple of other new songs were recorded for the Lost Ark Studio Compilation Volume 4, “Gone Away Bluebird” and “Turns to Dust,” and they were named Best Rock at the 2013 San Diego Music Awards, but then band sightings became scarce other than a couple of tours and the occasional one-off gig. The next few years saw multiple lineup changes and several recording sessions that would remain unreleased. Five years after their debut album, a sophomore full-length finally dropped in 2017, It's Always Never. This past May saw the release of a ten-song self-titled full-length expected to feature heavily at this show, with a lineup including co-founders Hofbauer and Hunt backed by Jason and Kyle Areford. The bill includes Drug Hunt, originally known as Bad Vibes until recently signing with local Blind Owl Records and changing their name.

Manual Scan, the Monsoon, King Whisker

  • Friday, July 19, 2019, 8 p.m.
  • Himmelberg's, 369 Tenth Avenue, San Diego

This downtown Comic-Con party is headlined by a band with numerous comic book connections, Manual Scan, whose frontman Bart Mendoza once had a day job managing a local comic distribution warehouse. Early band sleeves featured Warholian comic strip drawings, and Mendoza’s record label Blindspot frequently commissions sleeve artwork from local cartoon stars such as the late Batton Lash (Supernatural Law) and Flintstones illustrator Scott Shaw! The ‘60s pop-inspired favorite of the local mod scene was formed in the early 1980s and still features Mendoza with longtime musical partner Kevin Donaker-Ring, who also plays with him in the Shambles. The party will double as a one-year anniversary celebration for the Scooter Chronicles book that Mendoza contributed to, co-published by local comic book company IDW (Star Trek, X-Files, etc). Events such as a costume contest will run until midnight, with the venue open to all ages until 10pm. Also appearing will be the Monsoon and King Whisker.

Hullabaloo and Israel Maldonado

The third concert of the summer in the Discovery Garden series includes crafts for kids, face painting, an Epic Eatz food truck, gelato by EscoGelato, wine and Karl Strauss beer for adults, and full access to the Museum’s hands-on exhibits. Headliners Hullabaloo are a kids’ rock duo which has won several national awards, including Parents Choice and NAPPA Gold, plus inclusion on Best of the Year lists from Parents magazine and Education.com. Steve Denyes and Brendan Kremer met in kindergarten in Del Mar and started playing music together in fifth grade. When they formed Hullabaloo in 2004, “We really wanted this to be a project where the audio would inspire them [kids] to create a picture in their minds rather than have one pop up on a screen,” says Denyes. “In recording the monologues, we were inspired by classic radio shows like Prairie Home Companion and more modern versions like This American Life and Radio Lab, where stories are told in conjunction with sound effects that spark the imagination.” With over a half dozen CDs now in release, the duo will also stage a morning appearance at the Kensington-Normal Heights Library on July 23, as well as performing for National Carousel Day at Balboa Park on July 25. For their Museum event, acoustic Latin singer-songwriter Israel Maldonado will perform an opening set.

Sue Palmer

After majoring in political science at SDSU, Sue Palmer - often called the Queen of Boogie Woogie - played in an all-women rock band called Ms. B. Haven, before moving on to Pearl Tapioca. For around a dozen years, she worked with Tobacco Road (which won seven San Diego Music Awards during her tenure from 1986 through 1994), but by 1987 was able to buy a keyboard, quit her day job, and make music full time. She first earned widespread attention while backing up blues belter Candye Kane. They toured the world together, with Palmer also appearing on Kane’s CDs like Diva La Grande and Swango (the latter’s title track was co-written by the duo). Palmer left Kane’s band in summer 1999, though they reunited for a while after Palmer was diagnosed with breast cancer, and they continued to collaborate until Kane’s own cancer-related death. When Palmer formed the Motel Swing Orchestra, their first album, Boogie Woogie and Motel Swing, began a long run of San Diego Music Award nominations, several of which they’ve won. A new Sue Palmer album was released last summer, Gems: 1980-2018, Volume 1, featuring local guest players like Daniel Jackson, Gilbert Castellanos, Rob Thorsen, Preston Coleman, Molly Stone (Stones Throw), Adrian Demain, Jimmy Woodard, and David Mosby. Among the tracks is a newly recorded song written by Candye Kane, “Don’t Cry for Me, New Jersey.”

PRXZM and Party Nails

  • Tuesday, July 23, 2019, 8 p.m.
  • Casbah, 2501 Kettner Boulevard, San Diego
  • 21+

San Francisco-based electronic pop duo, PRXZM (Emma Maidenberg and Nick Ortega) is on a co-headlining tour with Party Nails. The duo reportedly began their collaboration as a way to kill time together in the dorm rooms while both were attending Indiana University in 2013. With a sound inspired by European electronic synth rock as much as the current EDM heavy hitters, Ortega is a one-man keyboard wizard who sets the musical backdrops, while vocalist and lyricist Maidenberg spins her poetic and mildly operatic story-songs. Party Nails is a punk-inclined electronic pop artist whose debut album, Past Lives and Paychecks, was released last October. The bill includes Maiah Manser, whose new single “See Thru It” has already scored over 100,000 Spotify plays.
