Gang members pulled over at Abbot and Newport

"We don’t know if this weapon was involved in a homicide or not."
"We don’t know if this weapon was involved in a homicide or not."

San Diego Police Officers arrested four individuals in Ocean Beach on Monday afternoon, after a routine traffic stop led to a known gang member fighting the sergeant and a loaded gun being recovered from the car.

“Everybody says we don’t have a gang problem anymore."

“Initially we saw the vehicle in the lot (Abbot and Newport) and waited for him to pull out,” said one of the arresting officers. “When he did, we pulled over the vehicle for traffic infractions — window tint in the front, rear light out and front headlight out — so enough infractions for me to stop him. “

There were four people in the car at the time of the stop.

“Initially one suspect gave us a fake name, as we confronted him on it — it was the same time officers found the gun in the car. The suspect tried to run, got into a scuffle with our sergeant and subsequently, all four individuals were arrested…we’ve got one known gang member and three others in one vehicle with a gun, we don’t know if this weapon was involved in a homicide or not, so yes, this is an ongoing investigation and they were all arrested.”

Also found was a portable stereo-speaker, etched with the gang's ID.

“Everybody says we don’t have a gang problem anymore, that it doesn’t exist,” the officer said while shaking his head. “And this is how we stop it, something as minor as a traffic infractions.”
