Neil McCaffrey started surfing in Rhode Island at the age of ten. Twenty-one years later, he is surfing all around San Diego. On this sunny morning in Ocean Beach, McCaffrey is surfing by the lifetower.
“O.B. has a bit of everything. There’s Sunset Cliffs, the Pier, the Jetty.”
McCaffrey, a native of Ocean Beach owns Saltwater Surf & Supply on Niagara Street. "I grew up working in a lot of surf shops and then managed a few."
At the Cliffs, I’ll usually surf a little longer board. When the waves are really small I’ll take a longboard out. For beginners he recommends, “a longer board that’s a little bit thicker and wider. Easier to paddle, easier to catch waves on.”
“I’ve travelled quite a bit surfing and seen a couple sharks and rescued a couple people. Indonesia was the coolest place I’ve surfed. There are certain areas you can go to where the tide is low and the waves are perfect and there’s no one around."
