In the 1850s, San Diego pioneer Louis Rose maintained cattle and a ranch house in Rose Canyon, utilizing the canyon’s stream to water his animals. As the town grew up around the creek and Mission Bay was dredged, the inlet was moved to the east from Kendall Frost Preserve to where it is located now.
The Rose Creek Watershed Alliance was formed in 2005 with the aim of cleaning up and improving the entire watershed. Though the watershed from San Clemente Canyon and through Marion Bear Park had homeless camps and litter, the section nearest the entrance to the bay was the worst. Shopping carts and litter could be seen in the channel.
Since the Watershed Alliance began their efforts, several cleanup events have been organized. Along with the cleanup efforts, the new Rose Creek Bikeway under construction will fill the gap in the Regional Bike Network between Sorrento Valley and University City in the north and points to the south including Mission Valley and downtown.
This Saturday. I Love A Clean San Diego and the Rose Creek Watershed Alliance are hosting a cleanup; supplies, snacks and water provided.
