Sunset Cliffs mermaid decoy proves effective lure for Lovecraftian Elder God

NO, NOT REALLY — “Well, now we know why someone placed a fake mermaid on the rocks off Sunset Cliffs,” says San Diego Fish & Game’s head of code enforcement Howard Phillips. “She proved to be just the thing to rouse an Elder God’s interest. We think this fella may be Nodens, which is a good thing, since his visage doesn’t usually bring insanity to all who behold it, and he isn’t usually known to feast on the souls of the innocent. Still, it seems likely that he’s going to be pretty upset when he finds out he’s been stirred from the sweet nightmares of his unending sleep by a mannequin and not a True Consort. And on top of that, we won’t have reached the Season of Summoning until mid-July. Someone’s going to wind up paying for a blunder like that with everything they’ve ever held most dear, not to mention a century or two of unendurable agony in the slime pits of R’lyeh. Remember people: Fish & Game publishes detailed guides and other resources about things like this on its website for your benefit. Don’t end up wishing you never went fishing!”
