A large group of San Diego beverage producers have brought home a pile of medals from a prestigious national competition, and this time we're not talking about beer.
The San Diego County Vintners Association reports that local wineries tallied 55 medals at the 2018 judging of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The awards haul included four gold medals and six double golds.
Sixteen wineries earned medals locally. The biggest individual haul went to Solana Beach winemaker Caruth Cellars, which earned 15 medals, including a gold and three double-golds.
Overall, 6960 wines representing 35 states competed at the annual competition, said to be the largest of its kind in the U.S. The merit-based competition judges each wine for quality, rating each of bronze, medal, or gold quality. Consequently, each of the 178 categories features multiple bronze, medal, golds, and even double-gold winners; and few fail to medal altogether. This year, more than 6200 of the total contest entries earned a bronze or better (about 90 percent).
Double-gold indicates that all judges to taste that wine were unanimous in rating it gold-medal quality.
Caruth won double-gold for a 2015 cabernet sauvignon, 2015 Bordeaux, and 2016 pinot noir. It earned gold for its Tattoo Red syrah blend.
The three other wineries recognized with double-golds were: Fallbrook Winery, for a 2012 merlot; Point Loma's Gianni Buonomo Vintners, for a 2014 Charbono (Italian red); and La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery, for a locally grown 2015 Cabernet Franc.
San Diego County Vintners Association reports the 55 collective medals this year were up from 39 local medals won last year. That count included 8 golds and a best of show for Shadow Mountain Vineyards (in Warner Springs).
Best of class is awarded to the best judged wine in that category. The biggest awards go to the sweepstakes winners: naming one wine each the best overall white, red, rosé, or sparkling wine in the entire competition.
