You just got to yell at people

Mission Beach jetty better for goofy footers

It was a windy day at the jetty when Bryce Victery pulled his board out of the water after a morning surf. Victery has been surfing the beaches of San Diego since he was 13. “Today is better for short boards, it’s pretty choppy out there.”

The jetty has been known to have territorial locals. “You just got to yell at people. Whoever is on the inside of the wave has the right to go. If someone cuts you off and they are not on the inside of the wave you have a right to cut them off.”

Most of Victery’s surf injuries have happened at South Mission. “I’ve been hit by stingrays. They sit by the jetty because it’s warm, I think. Once I stepped off into one, but I surfed another 20 minutes until I got out because I couldn’t put pressure on it anymore.”

The jetty is optimal for goofy footers, but not so much for the regulars. “Right where the jetty is the waves can get really big and nice but it only goes left. If you are right sided it’s pretty hard to surf right there, so I surf a little off from the jetty. By the jetty can get super sketchy, I’ve almost collided into the rocks before carving out.”
