“I’ve never heard a sound like that, “ Devin told me. “He literally fell backwards, off the cliff, and banged his head hard on the rocks.”
Devin was one the three men who witnessed the accident in Ocean Beach on Saturday afternoon (September 16) in which a man fell backward off an approximately five-foot ledge at the end of Del Monte Avenue. Devin was there along with friends Ali and Abraham — they pulled the victim out of the water.
“This man here,” Abraham said as he pointed to Ali, “he is a hero, he jumped right in… He was like Aqua-Man.”
The victim — who appeared to be heavily intoxicated — was standing with his back to the ocean when he began taking steps backward.
“I said, ‘Hold up! Stop!” said Ali. “And everyone else was telling him to stop at the same time....
“He’s hard of hearing,” Ali continued. “He has a hearing aid, too, so I don’t think he really heard us and he kept going, like he was trying to climb down, with his back to the ocean and — bam…. He’s drunk as fuck right now.
“He dropped down [off the ledge] and wasn’t moving at first, wasn’t moving at all, just his body floating on top of the water, face up. Where he fell, there is some water in the crevice that kept him floating…. We actually met him earlier in the day, like around 10 o’clock, and he was really loaded then, too.“
Curiously, two of the three “heroes” were wearing only underwear.
“Nah, we didn’t strip down to save the dude,” Ali said with a chuckle. “We were already here swimming.”
The man was taken to the hospital with a very bloody head injury. First responders had no comment.
