A trend of endowing mansions with fanciful and often foreign names seems to be emerging among San Diego’s mega-rich. Many may be familiar with La Jolla’s Foxhill estate, former home of the local publishing magnate Copley family, but how about Coronado’s “Zee Huis”?

Dutch for “sea house,” Zee Huis “is a one of a kind, three-building compound which overlooks the San Diego harbor and offers one of the best views of the city’s skyline. During the day it boasts a panoramic view of sailboats and other harbor activity. At night, lights from the San Diego skyline waft across the rippling water to create a multi-colored dance of lights.”

Beds: 8

Baths: 11

Current Owner: J. Scott Benson

List Price: $13,900,000

The gated complex at 709-711 1st Avenue includes eight bedrooms and eleven baths, with more than 7200 square feet of living area under roof. Luxury appointments in the “stunning” nine-room main residence include a living room with “a fifteen-foot powered disappearing Fleetwood sliding glass doors that offer an unobstructed view of the harbor and the San Diego skyline” along with a “warm and inviting pub adorned with French polished mahogany panel walls” and “includes a wet bar, additional refrigeration, icemaker and wine cooler....

Includes an elevator for second-floor access to two en-suite bedrooms

“The spacious kitchen with butler’s pantry features cabinets made from a rare fiddle back Koa and Blue Bahia stone, with stainless accents. The kitchen is equipped with new top of the line appliances: Gaggenau cooktops (gas burners, teppan yaki and a steamer), dual Viking ovens, multiple Sub Zero refrigerators/freezers and more.”

Two garages provide parking for up to five cars

Other interior features include an elevator for second-floor access to two en-suite bedrooms and “a 5-star hotel quality guest room,” laundry rooms on both floors, and a ground-floor master suite with his-and-hers closets and baths. Each bedroom has its own fireplace.

The carriage house “is ideal for an extended family, staff or longer guest visits,” featuring “two vaulted ceiling living areas, one with a fireplace and a contemporary kitchen,” two more en-suite baths, hardwood flooring, and a balcony overlooking the courtyard.

It only looks like the pool is overflowing into the bay

Meanwhile, “a freestanding second building, situated in the middle of the courtyard, could be used as an office, exercise room or guesthouse. It includes a full bath, sauna room, wet bar and an adjacent exterior oversized hot tub sanctuary.”

Perhaps San Diego’s largest private deck to enjoy the skyline

Two garages provide parking for up to five cars, workshop space, as well as additional laundry facilities and an extra half-bath. One garage includes a “powered vehicle turntable” for those who can’t be bothered to back into or out of the space.

The grounds include “a stunning and completely private courtyard with an abundance of gardens, a lawn area,” and backyard with “zero-edge pool that appears to pour directly into the bay.” Another half-bath accessed from the exterior “provides facilities for wet pool residents as well as property workers” who might not be allowed inside.

“Perhaps the most dramatic feature of this property is the massive deck with a 180-degree view of the bay, from Point Loma to Petco Park, encompassing the Midway, Seaport Village and the Convention Center,” listing materials continue. “At nearly 1,500 square feet, it is easily one of, if not the largest, deck to enjoy this amazing view of San Diego’s skyline. The deck is perfect for entertaining intimate parties as well as hosting very large gatherings. Amenities include an exterior fireplace, wood fired pizza oven, wet bar and grill. This large deck has both covered/heated eating and seating areas, including a 12 person oversized teak dining table and ample open-air spaces.”

Public records identify the current owner of Zee Huis as J. Scott Benson, CEO at tech firm Infinetics. The home was last reported sold in May of 2014 for $10,450,000 — it carried an asking price of $14.9 million at the time.

The home was re-listed this April, and the asking price — which includes all furniture — remains unchanged to date at $13,900,000.
