On Thursday, October 19, Kieren Anderson, a big wave pro surfer, invited Hunter Lysaught to Mavericks to surf the world-renowned wave on opening day October 20 north of Half Moon Bay. Lysaught, a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker in Rancho Santa Fe, had to move two real estate open houses in order to make the trip; he left San Diego at 10:30 p.m. and got there at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20.  Sleep deprived and dehydrated from drinking coffee throughout the night, Lysaught paddled out for 25 minutes to the lineup at first light with his surfboard, a 4/3 mm wetsuit, a wetsuit hood, wetsuit booties, gloves and a vest with two CO2 tanks.

He waited two and a half hours before catching a 20-foot wave and riding it to shore. Prior to Mavericks, the largest wave he had surfed was a 15-foot wave at Blacks Beach in La Jolla.

“I couldn’t have done it without my faith. My buddy Cameron Vurbeff told me before I paddled out that he had a dream I was going to die going for a wave ,” said. Lysaught. “The words, ‘Be bold, courageous and have faith,’ from Joshua 1:9 kept playing in my mind while I was out in the water.”
