I recently rewatched the entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer (USA, 1997–2003, WB Television_ series with my 15-year-old son and I was completely enthralled, yet again. Two decades after it first aired — Buffy still slays. The “friends are the family we choose” theme provided by the Scooby Gang is timeless, and the dialogue is pure Joss Whedon gold. This time around the instant gratification of binging was addictive and I discovered that while 20-year-old me might have been Team Angel, 40-year-old me is Team Spike (no surprise I still can’t stand Riley).
Whedon filmed his adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in 12 days (USA, 2012, Lionsgate). Ever a master of dialogue, it’s no surprise that he should take on a personal project written by the immortal Bard. Smart and witty, the war of words often takes center stage, much like Buffy, but without the Hellmouth.
