After six years of stocking non-breeding trout, next spring the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will begin raising and stocking little breeders in the Owens River and Mono Lake basins.
Stopped in 2011, lawsuits against department claimed brood stock may harm native Golden Trout and Cutthroats, by crossbreeding with Rainbow stockers.
The state finally proved there are no native Cutthroats or Goldens in the Mono Lake or Owens River basins. However nonbreeders will continue to be stocked in the Walker River.
The switch to breeders won’t lead to a sustainable fishery in either basin, said a state biologist. “There’s too much fishing pressure,” he said.
