The arroyo El Tule cuts through the volcanic hills that rise just inland between Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas. The dry river bed runs south/southeast toward the confluence of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean where, when flowing during heavy rains, it dumps tons of desert sand and run-off debris into the ocean. The nearshore waves and currents move and redeposit the sand constantly. Just offshore, a volcanic reef hosting skin-shredding boulders rises to create a hump in the seas as south swells approach landfall. This is Zippers surf break.
Zippers draws a heavy crowd of locals and tourists. Mexican surfers can now be as territorial as locals in the lineups along the California coast.
Zippers’ hard reputation will soften a bit during the Los Cabos Open of Surf running from June 6 through June 11, the largest professional surf event in Latin America. Live music will include Totoy performing at sunset on the beach on Thursday, June 8. The event is free to attend. For accommodation or travel information, check the event website.
