On April 27th, Kathy reported an issue to the City’s General Improvement Department regarding a utility cover located in front of the fire station on the west side of Ebers Street in Ocean Beach.
“It's some sort of utility cover- that has become obnoxiously loud and dangerous, especially anytime someone drives over it,” she said, “And I saw a biker swerve and almost crash.”
“I made a report yesterday {April 27) and they came to address the issue within a few hours, which I was surprised and grateful for. When I realized, the loud clanking had stopped, I was elated!”
Kathy’s elation didn’t last long when she went out and inspected the repair.
“I discovered they put a towel in it, to muffle the sound,” she told me. “I called again yesterday (May 6) to report it and someone was supposed to get back to me in 24-hours, as of now, no one has and the towel is still there.”
A representative from the City’s Storm Water Division told me they received a report and went to look at it but have no idea what kind of cover it is. “Its not a storm drain, looks like it might belong to SDG&E or AT&T so it was referred to Streets Division.”
After contacting Streets this morning, I was told — as were others who complained about it — that they are going to “look into it and get back to me,” as they were also unsure of what kind of cover it is.
Based on this information and the fact that SDG&E uses the same square type of manhole covers- I reached out to SDG&E, who were unable to confirm if it was theirs or not, but informed me they were sending out technicians this afternoon to take a look.
UPDATE: ON May 8th, both the City and SDG&E inspected the cover.
The City did confirm with me last week that it belonged to SDG&E.
SDG&E did send someone out to ‘fix’ it but as of this morning, “Towel is STILL there and its louder than ever,” Kathy told me.
