San Diego brewers fare well, awards-wise

QUAFF wins again, while state fair more than fair to locals

San Diego's Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity (QUAFF) wins its second straight national hombrew club award.
San Diego's Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity (QUAFF) wins its second straight national hombrew club award.

Several San Diego breweries added to their awards caches at the state fair over the weekend. Local homebrewers also made their prowess known, both on state and national levels.

San Diego beer companies claimed 25 medals in 42 categories of beer at the annual California State Fair commercial beer competition, including 11 gold medals and 6 silver.

The biggest winners included Coronado Brewing and South Park Brewing, each claiming two golds and a silver. Rip Current Brewing added two golds of its own.

One of the gold medals South Park received was in a new style category — New England IPA/Vermont IPA — representing the hazy IPA trend that has surged in popularity over the past year. South Park's second gold is shared with its sister brewery Monkey Paw, with an herb-and-honey beer made in collaboration with women-in-brewing club Pink Boots Society. Monkey Paw also claimed a gold of its own in the "alternative fermentables" category.

Ballast Point took home one medal in each color, while Pizza Port's Ocean Beach brewpub claimed gold and bronze. Karl Strauss earned a gold for Imperial IPA category, while Carlsbad newcomer Burgeon Beer nabbed gold as part of a San Diego sweep of the under-5-percent, session beer category. Other multiple medal winners include Intergalactic, Eppig Brewing, and North Park Beer Co.

Local homebrewers also had a good showing. 2016 national homebrewer of the year Nick Corona earned four gold medals and six overall to share Heavy Medal Brewer honors. Meanwhile QUAFF, the homebrewing club he represents, earned second place as Heavy Medal Club.

However, in National Homebrew Competition results also announced this weekend, QUAFF won the homebrew club award for the second straight year, its seventh in 20 years competing.
