The convention center isn’t the only place to find Comic-Con themed events over the next few days. Local publisher IDW (Kiss comics, Jem & the Holograms) presents “Crossover: Where Comics and Science Meet” at the Fleet Science Center on July 18, with a look at comic-book art as it pertains to science and technology. Comic creators and local scientists will moderate open discussions, with the admission price earning you two beers and a freebie from IDW.
The Comic-Con Kickoff Concert at the Brass Rail (July 19) previews music from a new EDM theatrical stage production, Remix, described as “the story of a DJ by the name Miss Dixie, who seeks vengeance after her gay brother is murdered in a hate crime and becomes a superhero named Justice.”
This year’s three-hour edition of w00tstock at the Balboa Theatre (July 20) features Mythbusters co-host Adam Savage and musical comedy from Paul Sabourin and Greg “Storm” DiCostanzo (aka Paul & Storm). The duo’s geek cred is top shelf, having contributed “Another Irish Drinking Song” to the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, as well as providing several tunes for the revived Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Speaking of MST3K, the Balboa Theatre (July 21 and 22) is one of the host venues where Joel, Jonah, the Bonehead band, and the ’bots will be riffing live to a pristine print of the 1962 chucklefest Eegah, as well as tackling another feature on Saturday, said to be “a fun, sci-fi thriller never before featured on MST3K.”
The Comic-Con Afterparty at the Merrow (July 21) also serves as the band Mega Ran’s tenth anniversary celebration, for a bill that includes the comic and pop culture-inspired Digital Lizards of Doom, as well as Kirby’s Dream Band and DJs Dizzy Doom and DN3.
The Heroes Brew Festival at Waterfront Park (July 22) includes DJ FishFonics, DJ Mancat, and celebrity DJ Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor from Game of Thrones.
The San Diego Symphony will stage “Raiders, Rebels and Supermen: The Music of John Williams” at Jacobs Music Center (July 22), featuring selections from Jurassic Park, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., and the Star Wars films. A pre-concert Star Wars Cantina party will include space-themed cocktails as well as a costume contest where Greedo may finally have a fair chance when Han tries to shoot him first.
