Bowie's birthday bash

Three acts offer highlights of his musical life

Bowiephonics really let the guitars shine and we ate the Bowie ear candy right from their hands!

Have you ever had a magic night involving music? This was one of those nights. Led by my psychedelic bolo tie, I walked into the Casbah with no expectations.

Ziggy Shuffledust started us off. Having a powerful set of pipes, Shuffledust's nine-piece Spiders From Mars band played all of Ziggy Stardust and other nuggets too. The singer delivered funny Bowie-esque quips between songs.

There's just something about David Bowie's music, though, that brings out the prettiest woman in San Diego. It was packed with beauties, humor and good times reigning the evening.

After Shuffledust, DJ Little Robert offered us early Davey Jones tunes and then the real fun started.

Bowiephonics hit the stage hard, and by the second song, “Black Country Rock,” we were hooked! Their five-piece unit really let the guitars shine and we ate the Bowie ear candy right from their hands! Mick Ronson would have been proud.

Ariel Levine then played the Darkstar album, but by then most were in rock-n-roll recovery. It was nice to hear how far Bowie had traveled with his material. Don't miss next year...you will leave feeling elated and inspired.

  • Concert: David Bowie Birthday Celebration
  • Date: January 8
  • Venue: Casbah
  • Seats: General
