Efforts by Democratic billionaire Irwin Jacobs to bulldoze a costly road and parking garage project through the heart of Balboa Park has been getting lobbying support from an outfit called Balboa Park United. The group paid influence-peddler Rachel Laing $18,000 to press for “funding for the Plaza de Panama project,” per Laing’s January 18 disclosure filing.
A litany of familiar county faces are lining up for reelection next year, including Republican sheriff Bill Gore and county treasurer Dan McAllister, who through the end of 2016 had $20,444 in the bank. Downtown lobbyist and GOP Lincoln Club honcho Paul Robinson kicked in $150 in September, and Rancho Santa Fe money manager Gabriel Wisdom and his wife (psychologist Diana Weiss-Wisdom) each came up with $500 in August. Meanwhile, the campaign stash of district attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who’s said she won’t be running for reelection, was down to $4162 at the end of the year, against $46,000 worth of two outstanding debts. Forty thousand dollars represent cash owed to Dumanis for a personal loan she made to the campaign in September 2014. The balance of $6000 remains to be paid to the Gemini Group, Dumanis’s longtime political consultant.
