She pulled within a seat of me and couldn’t wait to inquire about the open notepad on my lap.
“You a critic?” she asked.
“Nah,” I deadpanned, “if the movie stinks I’ll doodle.”
“Seriously,” she pressed. “Are you a critic?”
“Do you ever pick up The Reader?” I challenged.
She shook her head to-and-fro as if to help force the “Nope!” out of her mouth. “I get all my news off the TV.”
Her name was Gloria — “You can call me Glo!” — and in the ten preshow minutes we spent chatting, I amassed more of the 57-year-old grandmother of three’s personal backstory than I did Anastasia and Christian after spending two hours in their company.
The subject never turned to Trump, thankfully, but talk of Academy politics was unavoidable. She appeared to know everything there is to know about all of the nominated pictures, but when asked to name her favorite horse in this year’s Oscar steeplechase, she had seen but one of the nine nominated best pictures.
She frowned a bit before admitting, “My daughter went crazy over La La Land and dragged me to see it with her.”
Glo is that rare breed of Oscar-worshipper, the type that tries their best to put off seeing the nominated pictures until they play en masse at the AMC Best Picture Showcase.
New to me, the AMC BPS, now in its eleventh year, takes place over the course of two Saturdays.
Feb. 18 starting at 10 a.m.: Manchester by the Sea, Fences, Hell or High Water, La La Land.
Feb. 25 starting at 10 a.m.: Moonlight, Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, Hidden Figures.
You'll have less than 24 hours to digest the last five nominees before the Academy Awards show takes to the air on Sunday, Feb. 26.
The AMC Plaza Bonita 14 plays home to this year’s Showcase. Tickets for Day 1 are $32.50. (Day 2 prices have yet to be posted, but I’m guessing a pass will run around $41.00.) Purchase a 2 day pass to attend both days and save $5 off total ticket prices!
