The marsh will become less fragile as it increases in size.
What is now the Kendall-Frost marsh reserve at the northeast corner of Mission Bay Park was acquired by the city and set aside in 1965. Since then, the De Anza Cove trailer park, Campland on the Bay, Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club, and the Pacific Beach Tennis Club have leased the land. The last of the De Anza trailer residents moved out in October 2016.
Now the stage is set for a new era. Audubon conservation director Rebecca Schwartz Lesberg says, “Right now the existing marsh is hidden behind a chain-link fence, and there’s almost no access. As we increase size, the habitat becomes less fragile so that we can open up to walking trails, overlooks, a discovery center, or somewhere to bring children for nature-based play.”

On Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., those interested can join the San Diego Audubon Society at the reserve for Love Your Wetlands Day, which will include walks through the marsh.
