Jesus found in Point Loma

Local who posed for painting tracks down mural at Mormon church

A hot topic of late is people around the world sharing selfies while standing in front of famous paintings that contain their doppelgängers…but one San Diego woman, Sarah Biggart, doesn’t just look like her doppelgänger — it’s actually her, as a child.

A Christmas ornament featured a variation of the Lindley painting.

“I was about nine years old when I posed,” Biggart explains. “The artist came over to our house with a friend that was dressed as Jesus. We all got wrapped up in flowing fabric and he sat in a chair and I was directed to gaze at him like I was thinking about a question….. All the other kids were [Mormons].”

Biggart’s nanny, Margaret, was the one who got her involved.

“My family moved to SD in 1980 from the U.K.,” she continues. “My nanny Margaret came with us. She was 18 years old and was LDS; we were Jewish. She was always involved in the LDS Church, and still is. She lives in Utah with her husband; they have 5 kids and 12 grandkids, and I believe the artist was an acquaintance of hers.

“I remember attending the unveiling with my family, around 1982, and I did not think much about it after that. In the ’90s I found out it was a popular painting in Mormon bookstores, and I even have a Christmas ornament with the painting on it, and I did have a print, but I gave it to a Christian friend.”

Biggart spent weeks searching for the David Lindsley mural titled Jesus Christ with the Children before asking for the public’s help.

“Over a week ago, I posted a photo of the painting on Facebook because I could not remember where the actual mural was and it would be cool to see again after all these years."

An internet search shows ten LDS churches in San Diego, and shortly after sending out her info request, Biggart’s husband was working in the Point Loma area and decided to pop into the Mormon church there.

“My husband found it!” Biggart emailed me on the morning of December 11th. “It’s at the LDS Church at 3705 Tennyson Street in Point Loma.”

Biggart’s husband was told his wife was welcome to come back and take a picture in front of it. So, on December 13th, Biggart went to the church,.“I got it!” she exclaimed as she shared her awesome selfie with me.

The mural is located inside the church, on the wall of a children's classroom.
