August 5
HP investigated a vessel accident off of the Marriott Marina where a small power boat (RIB) hit a large wake caused by another vessel transiting the area. As the operator hit the wake it forced his vessel to erratically lean to starboard and he accidentally pushed on the throttles, forcing it into a hard turn. The operator was immediately ejected and due to not wearing the shut off lanyard, the vessel began turning in a sharp clockwise circle. Upon the vessel’s third circle, it struck the operator severing his arm off and almost his leg. Another boat rammed the circling vessel so it would not strike him again, possibly saving his life. The subject was taken out of the water by USCG and was taken to the nearest dock for transportation to hospital. Medical staff was unable to re-attach his arm but saved his leg.
HP were called to investigate a stolen dinghy from the area of the Bali Hai Restaurant. HP documented the report and a couple days later was notified that the owner located his dinghy at a different north bay marina.
August 4
HP contacted a subject on a pier for fishing as he was under a sign stating “No Fishing”. The subject was warned and was again contacted later in the same area fishing again. He was then issued a citation.
August 3
HP Responded to a Shelter Island marina to investigate a domestic violence call. The incident was documented and the couple agreed to a separation for the night.
August 2
HP responded to the Coronado Cays for a vessel fire. The power boat left the dock and soon began smoking from the engine compartment. By the time the operator returned to the dock, the vessel’s engine compartment was on fire. All passengers jumped to the dock and the vessel was soon adrift in the area as it became fully engulfed in flames. HP and Coronado Fire extinguished the fire and HP dewatered the vessel. HP then made notifications to the environmental agencies for some petroleum products in the water.
