What is probably the most inclusive triathlon event on the West Coast will be held at South Bay’s Bayside Park this Sunday. The Chula Vista Challenge features race events for entrants in groups the ‘Itsy Bitsy’ 100 meter swim, 2.2 mile bike ride and .75 mile run for kids 7 to 10 years of age to the full half-triathlon distance course featuring a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run for men and women in age divisions from 18 to 85-plus in four-year intervals.
There are special divisions including Elite/Pro, Challenged, Military, Clydesdale (220+ pound men) and Athena (165+ pound women). Along with the Triathlon, there are Duathlon (run and bike) and Aquabike (swim and bike) events
The International divisions swim to the pier and back while the Sprint and Itsy Bitsy on the inner part of the course do their laps in front of the mid-portion of the park.
For the third leg, the competitors transition from bike to run at Quay and G and race south along the bike path through the park, past J Street Marina and around to the boat launch park south of the marina and back to the lap turnaround/ finish line just south of the spectator-friendly ‘hot corner’ at the snack bar by the pier.
