Chargers now on KFI AM 640

Los Angeles’ KFI AM 640 radio announced on April 26, it will be the flagship radio home of the Los Angeles Chargers. The 50,000-watt powerhouse station can be heard throughout San Diego County. The afternoon announcement came at 5:00 p.m. on the top-rated afternoon drive time John and Ken talk show The station, which carries mostly political talk, has not had a strong sports format in the past. But radio industry watchers probably knew something was up between KFI and the Chargers. On the day of announcing the Chargers will be moving to L.A., owner Dean Spanos and quarterback Phillip Rivers made themselves readily available to the KFI talk host throughout the day.

Past Charger star LaDainian Tomlinson, now a spokesperson for the team, also appeared regularly on KFI as the team made announcements about coaches, their temporary Stub Hub stadium, and season ticket prices.

Owned by iHeartMedia, KFI’s sister station, AM 570 LA Sports, will add additional programming to the Chargers in pre and post game coverage. The multi-year media deal will include KABC Channel 7 as the Charger’s TV partner. L.A.’s Channel 54, KAZA Azteca America, and radio’s 980 am La Mira Mira! Will serve the Charger’s Spanish language market.
