Bluefin tuna weighing 209.8 pounds caught

Largemouth bass heating up the tapwater

Saltwater

Though there were a thousand less yellowtail caught this past week and the bluefin count was down a bit, several boats got limits or near limits on yellowtail and some of the bluefin tuna caught were well over 100 pounds with one weighing in at 209.8 pounds, a fat specimen hauled aboard the Oceanside 95 on an overnight run.

Steven Welsh with 209.8-pound bluefin tuna.

Angler Steven Welsh dropped a nose-hooked sardine with a rubber-banded 3-oz. torpedo sinker to entice the big fish and brought it to gaff in just 30 minutes. The inshore fishing has been heating up as well for the private boaters, though not much is reflected in the landing counts as many of the ¾ day boats are out offshore looking for the tuna.

Freshwater

The local lakes are all reporting good fishing with species caught depending on which body of water and species sought. Lake Wohlford, Lake Poway and Santee Lakes are reporting good trout fishing along with a decent catfish bite, while Lake Murray, Jennings and San Vicente are reporting a strong largemouth bass bite around structure on just about any lure commonly used from drop-shot plastics to top-water buzz baits. The morning hours have been best, with some anglers reporting up to a couple dozen bass caught and released in a few hours. Lake Skinner is a little slow on stripers, though they are reporting a ‘wide open’ bite on carp and decent panfish. Use dough balls for the carp and red worms or small nightcrawlers on the panfish.
