A day in the life of a lifeguard

Sailboat explodes; good samaritan pulls burned man from water

August 21

— HP responded to a fully engulfed vessel fire in La Playa Cove A— 1 Anchorage. HP found that the owner/occupant was aboard the sailboat when it exploded into flames. He jumped into the water and was rescued by a Good Samaritan. He was then transported to the UCSD Burn Center in critical condition. HP extinguished the fire and are investigating the cause.

— HP were patrolling in Glorietta Bay when a subject flagged them down regarding a small dog he found swimming around the area. The small dog appeared to be in the water for a while and was wearing a life preserver. A short time later, the officers were contacted by a distraught subject who stated they had lost their dog when they were sailing through the area. The subject believed the dog fell overboard. He was pleasantly surprised when the officer retrieved the dog from the patrol boat and gave it back to him.

— Flair Spotted by OB Tower ½ mile off Channel. R5 and Jet1 respond. Report unfounded.

— MDC 45y/o female with an ankle injury at Blacks; 31Sam, E9 andMR9 at scene; 31Sam provides transport up hill, all units clear.

— Car Fire at 1534 Quivira Way. U42 on scene calls it clear, SDFD cancelled.

— Swimmer Down in the water at Scripps tower. 62y/o male found floating face down; 31Sam/Scripps/E13/M41/3Sam on scene; CPR in progress, PT transported to Scripps LJ.

— Stolen PWC left at Marina Village. R2 and M1 on scene. MI requested for pump out. Vessel Towed to OPS dock and impounded.

— Boogie Board in Distress at No Surf. Jet1, U100 and 1Sam respond. Jet1 makes the rescue and is clear.

— 24y/o female Syncope on the Citizens trail. 31Sam and SDFD respond. Fire and LGs walk PT to the top. PT AMA.

— 14y/o female with an ankle injury at Windansea. U32, 3Sam, E16 and MR9 on scene. PT transported to Scripps LJ.

— 42y/o male with hand injury, laceration at South Pac Jet ski area. 4Sam, R2, E25 and M25 on scene. PT transported to Scripps LJ.

— Sick person at 700 Grand. 21Sam responds. Fire handles.

— Ped vs Bike at Model Yacht Pond on Vacation Isle. 41Sam, M16 and E20 on scene. PT transported to Scripps LJ.

August 20

— Lifeguard rescue vessel is in scene with a disabled vessel at Stoney Point. The lifeguard rescue vessel tows the disabled vessel to South Shores Boat Ramp and clears.

— Missing PWC matches description of found PWC on Fiesta Island. SDPD to handle.

1130 Medical: Lifeguards request medics for a 60 year old male difficulty breathing history of COPD. M— 20 transports to Scripps La Jolla.

— 2 PWC’s with 4 POB on the Weir, two lifeguard rescue vessels and a fire boat respond. PWC’s are towed back to the reception dock, clear.

— PB lifeguards report a vessel over 5 MPH within 1000’ of the shore line off T25. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds and issues a citation.

— U35 requests a Northern area cliff response for an uninjured male at the Boundary Line. Victim was lowered to the beach via rope rescue.

— 911 call reporting a 66y/o male with heat stroke on the Citizens Trail. Lifeguards walk the patient to the top of the trail where he AMA’s with E9.

— 911 call for a vessel close to the rocks off La Jolla Cove. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds, the vessel was towed to safety by a Good Samaritan.

— Call for a 24 y/o female possibly having a seizure at the Tourmaline Parking Lot. Lifeguards and medics respond, M— 20 transports to Sharp Memorial.

— Seaforth boat rentals reports that they have two PWC’s with damage at their dock from a vessel accident. Lifeguards and SDPD respond, SDPD handles accident investigation.

— 911 transfer from fire reporting a man down on the Citizens Trail. Lifeguards and fire respond, fire arrives on scene and walk the patient out who AMA’s lifeguards cancel response.

— Boat U.S. vessel calls and says he has wrapped both of his props while towing a vessel at the weir. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds and tows the vessel towards Dana Landing until another Boat U.S. vessel takes over tow.

San Diego Lifeguards are a 24 hour rescue agency whose responsibilities include water rescue, boat rescue, marine fire suppression, coastal cliff rescue, underwater search and recovery, swift water and flood search, rescue and emergency medical response. San Diego Lifeguards also handle enforcement of city, state and federal laws and regulations. Lifeguards are classified as peace officers with the power of arrest.
