The energy was amped up to a near-frenzy when East and his band performed “Rebel Rebel” as a tribute to the late David Bowie.
Anderson East performed his soulful Southern R&B for a packed house at Belly Up Tavern Sunday on the last night of his Devil in Me Tour. A four-camera crew recorded the show for a KPBS episode that will air in the fall.

East poured his heart and soul into his performance, and had worked up a visible sweat halfway through the show. It was clear that he has mastered the craft of being in charge of his audience — his timing was spot on, and he paused at just the right moments to hook the crowd. East’s vocals were powerful, yet vulnerable. He sang with such emotion and conviction that I would have believed anything he sang.
The set list featured all ten songs from East’s summer release Delilah, along with a handful of covers, including a stripped-down version of Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey” that was accompanied by steel guitar. If ever someone was born to cover Rod Stewart, it is Anderson East. With his raspy, gravelly voice, his version of “Stay With Me” had the crowd dancing and singing along. Anderson East returns to San Diego May 1 when he opens for Chris Stapleton’s sold-out show at Humphrey’s.
