Minimum wage, maximum campaign

San Diego decides in June

Toni Atkins backs it with $25,000

A political committee belonging to ex–Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, running for the state senate seat now occupied by fellow Democrat Marty Block (who recently left the race), has come up with $25,000 for the minimum-wage measure on San Diego’s June ballot. In addition to the March 10 contribution from Atkins, the San Diego Municipal Employees Association gave $5000 on March 11, and the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council kicked in a total of $13,922 the same week.

So far, donors aligned with the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, which conducted a costly referendum effort in 2014 to force the issue onto this year’s ballot, have yet to report any fundraising or spending on the question.

County supervisor Dave Roberts, facing a tough race against Republicans trying to exploit staffing and other controversies that have beset the first-term Democrat, is throwing a bash at Hillcrest’s Martinis above Fourth to raise reelection campaign cash. The fundraiser is billed as “A night of entertainment and great food,” for “our champion for the arts.”

Co-hosts of the March 28 event, with tickets starting at $50, include San Diego school-board member Kevin Beiser, port district trustee Bob Nelson, and attorney Susan Guinn. In 2014 Guinn unsuccessfully challenged the reelection bid of Republican county assessor, clerk, and recorder Ernie Dronenburg in a campaign centered on the incumbent’s attempt to stall issuance of gay-marriage licenses in San Diego after the Supreme Court struck down Proposition 8.
