“We recorded this album one hundred percent analog with engineer Jordan Andreen at Audio Design Recording here in San Diego,” says Daniel Cervantes of Mrs. Henry’s upcoming self-titled two-volume set. “Tracked on vintage gear, while rolling and splicing tape, we were able to capture incredible performances and improvisation by playing live in the studio.”
For this follow-up to their Otay full-length, bandleader Cervantes is backed by drummer Chad Lee, keyboardist Jody Bagley, and bassist Blake Dean.
“The band really came together last fall on our tour up the West Coast. Chad and Jody joined the ranks along with returning bassist Blake Dean, and things just clicked. We bonded together as a band, something the group hadn’t had since Mrs. Henry first started. Four years in, and this felt like the beginning. On this tour we also got a chance to work the songs and hone in on the new material and chemistry. We immediately booked studio time for December and planned for the next album to be our self-titled release.”
With an initial three-day tracking session, the band produced 12 songs. “Since we were committed to keeping things analog and ultimately be pressed to vinyl, the album was either going to have to be one mega triple LP or two records, which is what we ultimately decided on.”
Mrs. Henry Volume 1 debuts June 23 at the Merrow, after which it will be available for online sale and streaming on the band’s own Blind Owl label, followed by a CD and vinyl release (the second volume drops later this year). “Each album shows a different side of the band, Volume 2 being the heavier and lengthier of the two with an epic closer clocking in at 17:47 called ‘Where Are We Going?’ Volume 1 has some heavy hitters, too, including a crushing slow-burn cover of Charles Bradley’s ‘Lovin’ You, Baby’ sung by keyboardist Jody, as well as a full-band reworking of ‘Find a Circle,’ from our last album.
In advance of the record-release party, Mrs. Henry appears Thursday (June 2) at the Casbah.
