The week in jazz kicks off with Jazz Live from KSDS Jazz 88 and the Jeff Hamilton Trio with Christoph Luty on bass and Tamir Hendlemen on piano, at the San Diego City College Saville Theatre (14th & C Street) at 8 p.m. Tickets are free to Jazz 88 members, $10 general admission. Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos has two gigs at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado), beginning when he hosts the Young Lions Series at 6 p.m. and continuing at 8:30 when he leads the Latin jam session until 11:30. All ages, no cover charge, free parking… The KSDS Blues jam session goes down at Proud Mary’s Southern Bar & Grill (5500 Kearny Mesa Road) led by guitarist Mark Augustin and hosted by radio personality J. Otis Williams. Start time is 6:30 p.m. No cover, family-friendly.

New Jersey saxophonist Dayna Stephens leads an acclaimed quintet with Phillip Dizack on trumpet, Billy Childs on piano, Dave Robaire on bass, and Jonathan Pinson on drums at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library (1008 Wall Street) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go for $21 for Athenaeum members, $26 general admission, $15 student rush.

Vocalist Coral MacFarland Thuet joins guitarists Bob Boss and Joey Carano for the Happy Hour at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover charge… Vocalist Daneen Wilburn teams with multi-instrumentalist Kamau Kenyatta and friends at Bourre Southern Bistro (6523 University Avenue) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No cover charge… Guitarist Zo Shah and trombonist Matt Hall have a gig at the Hotel Karlan (14455 Penasquitos Drive) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover charge… The Gilbert Castellanos Trio with Joshua White and Rob Thorsen play the Plaza Bar at the Westgate Hotel (1055 Second Avenue) from 8 p.m. $20 food/drink minimum… The Bi-National Mambo Orchestra gets down at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) at 8 p.m. $20 at the door.

Guitarists Zo Shah and Grant Fisher play the Hotel Karlan from 5 to 9 p.m. No cover charge… Gilbert Castellanos leads a going away concert for trombonist Matt Hall and saxophonist Charlie Arbelaez with Rob Thorsen, Irving Flores, and Ryan Shaw and special guest musicians at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard). There will be two shows at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. $25 at the door… Trio de Janeiro with Lori Bell, Ron Satterfield, and Tommy Aros play Dizzy’s at 8 p.m. Tickets go for $15 at the door.

The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio with Dean Hulett on bass host the jam session at 98 Bottles from 2:30 to 5 p.m. No cover, you must be 21+ to attend… The Steph Johnson/Rob Thorsen duo play the Turf Supper Club (1116 25th Street) from 8 to 11 p.m. No cover charge.
