Extend the holiday weekend feeling by attending Jazz Live, sponsored by KSDS Jazz 88, with a tenor saxophone extravaganza featuring L.A. hornmen Rickey Woodard, Justo Almario, and Charles Owens at the Saville Theatre (14th & C Street) at 8 p.m. Free to Jazz 88 members, $10 general admission.

Wednesday 6
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos has two shows happening at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado) beginning at 6 p.m. when he hosts the Young Lions Series and continuing at 8:30 when he leads the jam session until 11:30 p.m. No cover, all ages, bring your instruments… The Blue Rockit Blues Band with Jesse Cox, James East, Hindy Bare and Barry Farrar play Humphreys Backstage Lounge (2241 Shelter Island Drive) from 7 to 11 p.m. $5 cover… Peter Sprague and Leonard Patton set up at the Cardiff Library (2081 Newcastle Avenue) at 7 p.m. Free.

The Gary Rich Jazz Quartet with Rob Thorsen, Jason Shattil, and Duncan Moore play Bourre Southern Bistro (6523 University Avenue) from 6 to 9 p.m. No cover… The Westgate Poolside Series (1055 Second Avenue) continues with the Robert Dove Quartet featuring Dean Hulett, Hugo Suarez, and Matt Smith at 6:30 p.m.

The Charlie Arbelaez Trio with Bob Boss and Rob Thorsen play the Happy Hour at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover, validated parking… Pianist Diane Moser returns to San Diego to play Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) with Mark Dresser, Hafez Modirzadeh and Vijay Anderson. The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio with Louis Valenzuela and Rob Thorsen hold down the jam session at 98 Bottles from 2:30 to 5 p.m. 21+, No cover… Bert Turetzky’s Sunday series at Dizzy’s continues with cellist Lorie Kirkell and violinist Jorge Soto at 7 p.m. $15 at the door.
