Boat thief/vandal attacks owner and gets all tied up

First to hospital, then to jail

  • 911 call reporting two deaf teenagers in distress off York Ct. SPB had already spotted the rescues and U-21 is in route code three, one swimmer self rescues and the other one is rescued by a lifeguard from U-21. RP confirms the two are the same two that were reported.
  • 911 call reporting dog has swam out into boating traffic off Fiesta Island and owner no longer has a visual. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds and tåhe dog is located.
  • La Jolla Cove guard reports an electrical box at the sidewalk sparked and is smoldering. The smoking stopped and SDG&E and station 38 are sending out technicians.

  • Abandoned surfboard at new break. No owner seen. 1Sam, Jet check area; nothing found.
  • 3 PWC’s inside the surf at the Pt. Loma Lighthouse. 1Sam and Jet check area. PWC’s left area.
  • Persons in distress at La Jolla Cove. Unit36, Unit34, PWC and 31Sam respond. 3 water rescues.
  • Surfers in distress at Froude and orchard. Rescue vessel, Jet2 responds. Surfers clear themselves.
  • Trapped surfer at Froude and Sunset Cliffs. 1Sam, 5L, a lifeguard rescue vessel, R44, Jet2, Engine22 and 2Sam respond. One cliff rescue, no transport.
  • Surfer injured at Big Rock at foot of Palomar St. 28 y/o male. C-spine. 3Sam, Unit32, lifeguard rescue vessel, Engine13, Medic21 respond. Transport to Scripps La Jolla.

  • U-34 requests medics for a slip and fall at Blacks Beach, C-spine precautions taken. E9 and M24 respond patient AMA’s with E9.

  • Vessel Listing in Mariners cove. Marine2 responds. Mooring 722 is too close to the beach and the boats keel is aground. Tide is low and vessel will be clear on the tides rise. Notify the City to move mooring further east.
  • Person Yelling for help in the water off Pacific Beach Dr. Rescue vessel, 24Sam and 3King respond. Nothing seen or heard by units on scene. 24Sam calls it clear.

  • Car stuck in standing water at Aldine Dr. and Fairmont. 4River and SDFR respond. 2 cars in the water. 1 water rescue made to extricate 1 person off the hood of his car. No injuries and the cars were marked for removal later.
  • RP calls about mooring 900 dragging anchor. Guardian checked on the vessel. It was already reported on Thursday of this week and a work request was entered for the Vulcan crew. The mooring is still anchored and the vessel is still floating. The mooring just needs to be reset in its original position.

  • HP impounded a vessel at a South Bay launch ramp for having expired registration.
  • PD informs of possible jumper from sunset cliffs blvd. All bridges checked up to I-8, GOA.
  • Lifeguard 3Lincoln reports kayaker in distress at Sanctuary in La Jolla. 3Sam checks and calls clear.
  • Unknown medical aid at Tourmaline Beach Park. Unit 25 and 21Sam on scene and patient elopes.

  • The owner of a vessel in the A-4 Anchorage near Coronado Bridge returned to find his boat adrift a short distance from the moorings and a male subject aboard that had vandalized it and was attempting to steal it. The owner confronted the subject who then attempted to attack him. The owner quickly subdued the suspect and tied him up with rope. Harbor Police were dispatched to the scene and subsequently arrested the subject for numerous charges. Suspect first transported to the hospital for treatment of wounds sustained while attacking owner; then to jail.
  • Vehicle stuck in the water at Hazard Center and Mission Center. 4River and 5River respond and push the vehicle out of the water.
  • SDFD call of swelling scrotum at Hammel’s surf shop on Ventura St. Lifeguards treat patient at the tower until medics arrive. Medic 25 transport to Sharp Memorial.
  • Catetory 4 water rescue 12350 Black Mountain Rd. Vehicle in the water with unknown occupants in vehicle. 5 River responds and cancelled due to the vehicle found unoccupied by PD.
  • Vehicle off the road at Dairy Mart and Camino de la Plata. SDPD calls because they have personnel entering the water. Vehicle found clear and multiple units cancel.
  • Cliff Rescues at South Boomer and Middle grounds, 2 victims. People stuck at 2 different locations, uninjured. Victims rescued, cleared.

  • A large sailboat in the A-4 Anchorage (Coronado Bridge) broke loose from its mooring ball and drifted across the bay, coming to rest against the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. HP responded and had the vessel towed/stored for the owner.
  • U-12 reports a personal water craft doing tow in surfing off Newbreak. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds and is clear with warnings.
  • VHF call reporting a 25’ sail boat off its mooring in Santa Barbara Cove. A lifeguard rescue vessel responds and secures with anchors.
  • Report of a surfer possibly in distress off No Surf Beach. 1Sam and a lifeguard rescue vessel respond. 1Sam reports the surfer is actively surfing, calm and in no danger.
  • Person stuck in car at La Jolla Village Dr. and Villa La Jolla Dr. 1River and E9 respond; victim is walked out/clear.
  • Person stuck in car at Mt. Aguilar and Mt. Alafan. 5River responds; cleared by Fire.
  • Two persons stuck in a car that stalled in the water. 5River responds; victims self extricate/clear.
  • Person stuck in vehicle at 11035 Roselle St. and Dunhill St. 2River and E41 respond. 1 person on top of a vehicle that is floating in the water. Victim is rescued and uninjured; other vehicles in the area are un-occupied.
  • Water rescues at Ward Rd. E17, 3River, 4River and 5River respond. 5River is cleared, 3River and 4River make 3 walk out rescues.

San Diego Lifeguards are a 24 hour rescue agency whose responsibilities include water rescue, boat rescue, marine fire suppression, coastal cliff rescue, underwater search and recovery, swift water and flood search, rescue and emergency medical response. San Diego Lifeguards also handle enforcement of city, state and federal laws and regulations. Lifeguards are classified as peace officers with the power of arrest.
