Star Wars fan robs bank, makes successful getaway (for now)

"It's much easier to enter a grocery store unnoticed and leave into a sea of people," said a policeman.
"It's much easier to enter a grocery store unnoticed and leave into a sea of people," said a policeman.

On January 9 at 2:00 p.m., the Wells Fargo Bank located within the Vons at 4725 Clairemont Drive at the Clairemont Square shopping center was robbed.

The bank teller told police that prior to the robbery the suspect was lingering in the adjacent florist area across from the bank kiosk. He lurked there for some time before he entered the bank waiting area and sat down in a chair facing the tellers. When it was his turn, the teller called him over to wait on him. The suspect immediately handed the teller a business-sized white envelope as he demanded money. The teller handed him back an undisclosed amount of bills in denominations of fifties and hundreds. The suspect fled on foot. The teller then pushed the silent alarm alerting the police.

Police investigate

I talked to one of the seven SDPD officers on the scene. He didn't want to be named but did say, "The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 20 to 30 with thinning hair. He was wearing a shirt with [Stormtroopers] from Star Wars on it. No weapons were used in the robbery."

The officer is confident that the suspect will be apprehended soon because he said that he is very unusual looking. He would not elaborate beyond this.

The police report further described the suspect as 5´3˝, very thin build, blond hair, and big ears. The Star Wars T-shirt was black and he had dark-colored pants.

When asked if kiosk banks are robbed more often than regular banks, the officer said, "It's much easier to enter a grocery store unnoticed and leave into a sea of people."

The police interviewed every employee at the bank and talked to the Vons store manager. The police viewed surveillance footage at the bank. Another officer was overheard saying that the video didn't have a good view of the suspect. The store manager said he would be making a copy of the surveillance video for the police.
