Wealthy Republican Ray Ellis lost out to Democrat Barbara Bry for the First District city-council seat representing La Jolla, but at least he got a refund. According to a December 2 closeout filed at city hall, the self-styled pension-fund expert received $25,000 from his campaign committee in repayment for a no-interest loan he’d made the group back in May 2015.
Ex-Padres owner John Moores, an erstwhile Democrat who lost his big-money bet on the so-called Cory Briggs Initiative to bar a convention center on the downtown bayfront, among other purposes, also failed to score in the race for San Diego city attorney. Records show the controversial Rancho Santa Fe denizen and his second wife Dianne, a retired gynecologist, pumped $4200 into the city attorney campaign of Republican Robert Hickey, who lost to Democrat Mara Elliott. Moores’s personal tab for the failed Briggs measure was $245,000 in loans and contributions.
