Tuesday 20
The annual “Unsilent Night” festivities kick off at 7 p.m. at the Gaslamp Quarter Station (Fifth Avenue/King Promenade). A large group of participants, each carrying a different sonic device, play Phil Kline’s “Unsilent Night” as they create a “parade of sound.” You can download “Unsilent Night” for your boom-box, smart-phone, or mp3 player here: unsilentnight.com/about.html.

Gilbert Castellanos presents the Young Lions Series this week featuring vocalist Zion Dyson at Panama 66 (1450 El Prado) at 6 p.m. before taking over to lead the jam session featuring pianist Irving Flores at 8:30 p.m. inside at the Copley Auditorium. All ages, no cover, musicians bring your instruments!

The Gary Rich Trio with Harley Magsino on bass and Jason Shattil on piano host a jam session at Harbor Music Hall (1506 India Street) at 7:30 p.m. Ten bucks and you’re in there… Vocalist Leonard Patton leads a group of friends including Peter Sprague, Matt Falker, Paul Nowell, and Mackenzie Leighton at Off Broadway Live (9490 Cuyamaca Street) at 7 p.m. Tickets will run you $27.

The GPS Trio featuring Justin Grinnell, Jim Plank, Tripp Sprague, plus Duncan Moore play the Happy Hour at the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No cover, no minimum, validated parking… Gilbert Castellanos presents Jazz at the Westgate (1055 Second Avenue) with L.A. heavyweights Melissa Morgan on vocals, Graham Dechter on guitar, and Sam Hirsh on piano at 8 p.m. There is no cover, but there is a $20 food/drink minimum… Alto saxophonist Christopher Hollyday fronts a quartet with Joshua White on piano, Rob Thorsen on bass, and Duncan Moore on drums at the new Dizzy’s (1717 Morena Bouevard) at 8 p.m. Tickets run $20 cash at the door, $15 for students.

Lots of jazz activities this Christmas Eve, beginning with Peter Sprague’s annual concert at the Del Mar Amphitheater (1540 Camino Del Mar) featuring vocalists Leonard Patton and Nina Francis and a whole slew of jazz characters at 1 p.m. and, as always, this is free… The Steph Johnson Trio with Rob Thorsen and Richard Sellers play the Rancho Valencia Resort (5921 Valencia Circle) from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. This is a Christmas dinner, so prices vary… Allison Adams Tucker spotlights Christmas Eve at the Westgate Hotel with Chase Morrin and Charles Weller at 8 p.m. $20 food/drink minimum.
