I have an golden excuse to mention pianist Martha Argerich. On December 5 she was honored with a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award. The Kennedy Center Honors will air on CBS December 27, at 9 p.m.
Joining Argerich are Al Pacino, James Taylor, Mavis Staples, and the Eagles. Make no mistake, they are joining her. Of all the recipients, the term "genius" can only be applied to Argerich.
Sorry, James Taylor, you’re a beautiful artist, but genius is something else. Sorry, Mr. Pacino, I'm not sure there are any genius actors. No genius actors? No. Brilliant? Yes.
Acting and genius are mutually exclusive. What genius would waste their genius on acting?
With a photographic musical memory Argerich is a bonafide genius. She plays a piece once and knows it. She combines the most ferocious technique with an artistry that has never been surpassed. There has never been a pianist quite like Argerich.
She is reclusive and private. She frequently cancels her engagements. In fact, she cancels at such a rate that she is no longer offered a contract.
The Kennedy Center always does a great job with artist profiles and Argerich's should be intriguing. Her personal life has been as dramatic as her unsurpassed performances of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. No one has ever said that being a genius is easy.
She has three daughters from three different men. I think that's enough personal information to validate the stormy conditions which surrounded her titanic career.
The Washington Post has an in-depth article on her life and career.
